| Prestwich - Aerial Perspective |
In December 2007 URBED and AGDR were appointed to develop a town centre vision and masterplan for Prestwich Village. This follows URBED's work on similar strategies for Bury Town Centre and Radcliffe. Prestwich is an important centre within Bury but also operates as a suburban centre for Manchester. It is a historic village surrounded by parkland, is home to the largest Jewish community outside London and is an increasingly popular place to live for professionals working in Manchester. It is served by Manchester's Metrolink as well as the M60, Manchester's orbital motorway. |

| Prestwich - Wider masterplan |
| The Vision for Prestwich is that it should be an urban village in the true sense of the word, a village that has been engulfed by Manchester but retains many village characteristics (including Morris Dancers - see below). The strategy starts by dealing with the road that runs through the centre that carries a huge amount of traffic to the motorway. Following detailed consultations the strategy proposes that the road be narrowed to allow wider pavements and parking. A second important decision was not to support the large Tesco store just outside the town centre in its plans to expand, but to focus instead on the redevelopment of the 1970s precinct. This is combined with a package of measures to support local shops and to redevelop/reconfigure local civic facilities such as the Library, Health Centre and Civic Suite (famous for ballroom dancing and Northern Soul nights). The strategy was published for consultation on 13 October and the consultation ran until 24 November 2008. The strategy was adopted as policy by Bury Council in July 2009 as evidence base for the Local Development Framework. |
