A preferred option will be drawn up during March and April, taking into
account comments received from the public. It will form the basis for a
Development Brief that will be used by Bury Council to guide
development in the town centre

Background: In January 2004 URBED completed the Re-inventing Radcliffe Strategy for Bury Council. As part of the study we developed a number of more detailed projects, of which the SUN Quarter was the one dealing with the town centre.

Our vision for the SUN Quarter was to create a Sustainable Urban Neighbourhood and the original masterplan provided for an open air market, a gallery and museum, a new library building, a remodelled bus station, residential units above retail together with a riverside park along the Irwell. It also included the reopening of Blackburn Street, a project which is being progressed by the Council.

A development brief was subsequently prepared by King Sturge and there has been huge interest in the site. However, due to the fall in the housing market interest has dropped. Recently two supermarkets have shown an interest in the area and there is still the potential to develop the bus station. Bury Council have therefore asked us to review and update the existing development brief and to explore whether it is possible to bring forward development.
