Marianne Heaslip

Marianne is an architect with interests in urban design, sustainable architecture, and participative design. She studied at Liverpool and Sheffield Universities, and has spent time in practice in London and Liverpool. She originally joined URBED as an urban designer in 2002 during a second year out, before returning to university to complete the Diploma in Architecture course at Sheffield. She has continued to work for URBED as a trainer on the GlassHouse design training courses. Whilst at URBED Marianne gained experience of community participation processes. She followed this interest through projects at Sheffield University, completing an MArch thesis on participation in the design process.

Her experience in practice includes large scale masterplanning, the design of buildings to meet BREEAM/Code for Sustainable Homes standards, as well as construction phase architectural services. She also has experience of working with historic buildings and contexts. Whilst at PTEa in Liverpool she designed and oversaw the construction of the visitor centre for the 2008 Liverpool Biennial in the Grade II listed ABC Cinema, she also worked on the development of the Regents Park 'Hub' building for David Morley Architects. She is currently working with the Helena Thompson Museum in Workington to develop plans to improve their Grade II* building.

In autumn 2009 she enrolled on the MSc Architecture: Advanced Environment and Energy Studies course at the Centre for Alternative Technology/UEL, where she is studying sustainable architecture and urbanism in depth.

Whilst continuing her involvement in the GlassHouse design training courses, she is also currently working on the 'Retrofit for the Future' competition, aiming to reduce the carbon emissions of existing housing by 80%.
